Marker Dance Party at the berkeley Art Museum l@te Session

Wow, it seems like just yesterday when Louis and Ramona were brainstorming in the Rock Paper Scissors Zine library about ways to draw, dance and listen to music at the same time… having fun! Now, thanks to the particularly vigorous and persistent efforts of Franklin Melendez, this Rock Paper Scissors party made its way to the Berkeley Art Museum’s l@te night session.

Once again, the beats were provided by our honorable DJ Razvan, the humble yet hardworking and friendly Oakland musician of the Black Market Collective who spun beats without a break at our last event. He was joined this time by DJ Dcoy.

I love sculptures that people are allowed to touch… that’s the whole point, right? This piece–forgive me, I don’t have the title–felt very California to me, reminding me of skateboard parks.

Marella was the feisty organizer who slaved over many of the details with Franklin. Ara, SoCal Big Bear girl, did too and she should really go snowboarding with me!

Weirdly enough I was drawing for 10 minutes then this girl kneeling beside me suddenly said she met me at a GigaOm conference a few months ago. I love how worlds are small that way!

I like this slabby concrete architecture at the Berkeley Art Museum. It reminds me of Eastern Europe.

i went to the library. i got a book called “an inordinate fondness for beetles.” i started drawing beetles. then i made this calendar. it’s called beetle book 2k10. and you can have one–or more–of your very own.

specs: the calendar is printed on legal size paper (8.5″ x 14″), so each page is 8.5″ x 7.” it is printed on regular old white laser office paper, except for the cover which is heavy weight “ivory.” it is machine-sewn for binding. all images are drawn by me.

to order: click the “donate” button on the upper-left part of the page. payment is donation-based sliding-scale of $5-10 per calendar. enter the amount you would like to donate, your shipping and billing information, and the number of calendars you would like (click on the blue link that reads “how many calendars do you want?”–this part is important so i know what to send you!!) you can pay with a credit/debit card or paypal account if you have one. i will ship calendars upon reciept of payment.

Two weeks only!

Take a look at the East Bay’s rich D.I.Y. culture during Zine Mart, a special pop-up shop of ‘zines and other self-produced multiples. Zine Mart is a creative partnership with the Oakland-based artist collective Rock Paper Scissors.

BAM/PFA (the Berkeley Art Museum) is delighted to host for the first time in a museum RPS’s extensive ‘zine library. This archive documents the history of these self-produced publications, as well as celebrating the East Bay’s innumerable contributions.

In addition, Zine Mart will feature instructional videos and contributions from other Bay Area ‘zine collectives, as well as specially commissioned ‘zines and multiples from Ari Marcopoulos, Bozidar Brazda, Kamao Patton, Marc Arthur, Vanessa Albury, Tammy Rae Carland, Taravat Talepasand, Joseph Akel, Isaac Valdez, and Kamao Patton, plus many more!

The opening reception is Fri, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. (store opens at 5 p.m.) and will feature a conversation between Ari Marcopoulos and Paul Schiek, as well as a book signing for SHOOT, the tome tracing the point and shoot revolution edited by Ken Miller. Zine Mart: Runs through Nov. 22 during regular museum hours.

Zine Workshop Event!

This Sunday (the 27th) from 12pm-3pm in conjunction with the twice monthly zine workshops there will be a really fun event at RPS! Everyone is invited to come and write a letter to their hometown for submission to the Letters Home zine that is being put together by a RPS volunteer. This project is definitely open to interpretation and letters could range from love or hate mail directed at your hometown to a short poem or comic. Hometowns can stir up a lot of emotions for people from fond memories to strong disdain and this zine hopes to capture that. Letters do not have to be completed at this event, but its a great way to get started on it, meet some interesting folk, and enjoy some courtesy baked goods!

San Francisco Zinefest 2009 – yay hurray

Rock Paper Scissors was out in full effect at the San Francisco Zinefest 2009! Many, many thanks to the S.F. Zinefest crew for putting on a wonderful event that brought many creative types of all kinds into the beautiful settings of Golden Gate Park. There was a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to bring the Zinefest to life that most of us would never see.

It was pretty cool talking to random tourist families who would come in and ask, “What’s a zine?” We got several e-mails from people who had never heard of a zine before. Hopefully they will go on and create cool zines at one of our zine jam workshops…

We heart the contributions. Microcosm publishing from Portland sat next to us and gave a whole stack of wonderful stuff. We did the Oakland O-town dance to celebrate, clapping and cheering, maybe next year we’ll bring pom-poms! It was cool talking “zine shop talk” about stuff from the 90s, stuff goin on now and the great future ahead.

The box kept getting more and more full–so that by the end of the day we had a huge bunch of submissions. It’s going to be really fun cataloging these and perhaps putting them online.

The most fun was explaining that much of the activity was from random volunteers and visitors much like yourselves. For instance, the Marker Art Party which became this gigantic zine pictured below was the product of some random conversations one afternoon between several volunteers. Here, one of the participants eyes a drawing he made that night.

We got to speak a lot about our upcoming zine workshops which you can find on the Rock Paper Scissors calendar. They’re free, friendly and full of lots of cool people who want to help you finish your zine. Sign up for the events list… you’ll be hearing about all sorts of cool things going on.

Marker Dance Party – Thank you!

Thanks to everyone for coming to the Marker Dance Party! It was so great to see people from different groups come together and interact with the music, the drawing and the dancing. The vibe was pretty positive and we saw so many new faces and groups of people… The day after the event there were people gushing about Oakland.

Here’s a further slideshow of the night including some set-up photographs…thanks to Lou, Ramona and DJ Razvan for working the hardest on this evening with the clean-up, setting up of paper, heavy speakers and the poster production.

Some favorite moments:

The spontaneous human pyramid.
The totally fabulous rocawear ponytail girl who wandered in from the Vibe next door with her sister at the end of the night and gushed about how she loved artists and wish there were creative things like this in Napa. We told her, “There are! Just start a marker party night there!”
The band from Arizona that had just played at Mamabuzz coming in and teaching people how to box.
Those long, long bamboo poles with markers attached (invented by Lou) that allowed people to draw way up high.
People who drew along to the dance videos projected on the wall.
All the new ideas passed around–and people wanting to do this again!
